Hot Slots and Cold Slots

July 25th, 2011

Regardless of whether you prefer to play your slots games online or in a land casino, you are bound to come across the terms hot slots and cold slots. Obviously since we are including online slots games, we are not talking about the literal temperature of the game. What we are actually talking about is how the slots game pays out

When you hear someone either in a casino or in an online forum talking about a cold slots game or a tight slots game, they mean that the slots game in question is not paying out. Either it is not paying out anything or it is making small payouts at infrequent intervals, enough so that the player feels as though he or she is losing more money than they think they should.

On the other hand, when you hear players on the slots floor or in online slots forums talk about a hot or loose slots game that means that the slots game paid out for them. Either it was making frequent smaller payouts or it was making regular larger payouts. Either way, it was paying out enough that the player felt it was doing better than regular.

The one thing to keep in mind in talks of hot and cold slots games is that there are slots myths that surround them. While it is true that a slot machine or online slots game could seem hot or cold to a player, it is not something that can be tracked; there are slots myths that tell players that a slots game will stay hot or cold for a certain number of spins before switching. This is untrue.

Also keep in mind that what one player thinks of as hot or cold may not match your own definition. Now if there are lots of players saying that a particular slots game is cold or tight then there might be some credence to what is being said. But do not base your choice to try an online slots game or slot machine based on what one person says.

From Online Slots to Scratch Cards

July 22nd, 2011

Scratch cards at online casinos are not as popular as online slots. But they are increasing in their appeal little by little. And as such more and more are being based off of online slots games to help boost their appeal.

At the very basics of the game, online scratch cards are not too much different than online slots games. I think that is why some online casino game software developers are now beginning to create online scratch cards based off of popular online slots themes; the hope is to draw players new to scratch cards in with familiar themes. Playtech is the latest software developer to try using popular themes to draw players to the scratch cards using themes such as Iron Man 2 and King Kong from their online slots lineup.

Online scratch cards allow players to place a wager on the card they have chosen from the available themes. Once the wager is set, players use their mouse to ‘scratch off’ the windows of the card and see what they have won. The prizes are then awarded based on which symbols are revealed, similar to how the payout in an online slots game is based on which symbols are landed on the reels.

The biggest difference is that online scratch cards do not have all the razzle dazzle and entertainment that online slots games have. And without reels, there are no free spins. And there are also no bonus games. Online scratch cards are in essence a simplified version of online slots games.

It will be interesting to see if this new approach of using popular online slots themes on online scratch cards will increase the number of players playing them. Playtech is leading the way in terms of this software development. If it works we are bound to see more and more online casino game software developers doing the same.

Payout Percentages for Choosing Slots

July 20th, 2011

At their core, online slots games are the same. They all work off of a Random Number Generator (RNG) which will pull one of the thousands of potential outcomes possible for the result of a spin each time. So when it comes to choosing which online slots game to play, players need something to go off of.

Some will choose which online slots game based purely on the theme of the game. There is nothing wrong with this; it is an entertainment based choice. And every online slots player has the right to play based on the enjoyment they get out of a theme.

Others will choose which slots online game to play based on the bonus features offered. A recent trend has software developers including a bonus game less often than in previous years. Some players do prefer bonus games to free spins—finding them more entertaining than free spins—and will seek out online slots with bonus games.

But a good number of online slots players will choose which game to play online after comparing the payout percentages of several online slots. The payout percentage of an online slots game is the amount of total wagers that is paid back out in winnings across the board; the winnings do not go to a single player. It is simply a percentage of how much that is taken in is paid back out. Naturally the higher the payout percentage, the more of the online slots game’s total wager is paid back out.

As a result online slots players will look for the online slots game with the highest payout percentage. A high payout percentage does not guarantee a large payout for any particular slots player. However players feel that there is a better chance of getting a payout out of an online slots game that pays back more than another online slots game.

Retro Slots on the Internet

July 19th, 2011

Does that sound like an oxymoron to you? Perhaps at first it is hard to imagine something retro on the Internet, but if you stop for a moment and think about some of the new online slots games released this year, especially Microgaming’s Retro Reels, the idea of the retro being found in online slots is not that far off.

Despite all of the high tech graphics capabilities out there, there is still a fondness for the classic aspect of the old school online slots. The aforementioned Retro Reels by Microgaming offer players a classic look with classic symbols such as cherries and bars. Using the classic symbols from the old slot machines of the past is only one way that the retro has found its way into online slots.

Another showing of the retro in online slots are the games that offer players three reels instead of the much more common and modern format of five reels. In some of these three reels the fewer number of reels is a concession to the retro while still offering players multiple paylines. Other retro styled online slots games with three reels only offer a single payline like the good ol’ slot machines.

What I find to be an interesting though is how long it will be before the graphical technology online slots developers use bring us full circle back to one-armed bandits. Already graphics technology has brought us rich 3D graphics and recently a real 3D online slots game. It is entirely possible for that technology to create 3D online slots games could be used to create a 3D virtual online slot machine which lets players pull the handle to spin the reels.

Regardless of whether an online slots developer actually creates such a virtual one-armed bandit, there is no denying that despite this being an age of high technology that there is a desire for the retro in our online slots games.

Math and Online Slots

July 18th, 2011

I was reading an online gambling site’s post about math and gambling. The idea is that there are roughly two categories of online gamblers: those that use math and those that don’t use math and wind up mad at those that do.

After giving it some thought I realized that online slots players are on the outside of this idea for the most part. The reason that there is math in online gambling is that math is necessary in order to figure out how to bet. Math is involved in the strategy of a casino game.

However there really is no strategy for online slots. We set our wagers and click Spin. There is nothing we can do to impact the outcome of a spin of the reels. Because we cannot impact the outcome of the spin there is no math involved in how we play online slots. The angry guy is just as likely to win as the guy who is crunching numbers.

There is some math in online slots, but it is not strategy based math or math that will help one slots player win more than another player. But we do use math when figuring out our wagers.

We will figure coins versus paylines to figure out our total wager. We can also use math to figure out what some of our potential payouts might be in order to help us figure out what to wager.

It is also true that the probability portion of math is involved. By this I mean that there is 1 in X chance of landing the jackpot. There is a probability for every payout on the pay table. Some players will go through and figure the math, but at the end of the day knowing the probabilities of a particular payout is not going to increase an online slots player’s chances of winning.

This all means that online slots players do not fall into the angry anti-math category. To my mind this is another plus 1 for online slots—it is the online casino game that does not require math and does not make for players who have a harder time with math to get angry with strong math online slots players.

Take me out to the slots game. Take me out to the casino! Okay, I will stop singing. But that is a big hint for the theme of this week’s Special Weekly Online Slots Bonuses at Slots Jungle.

If you did not guess that the theme this week is baseball you need to pack up your jersey and hit the locker room because this week the Special Weekly is all about going out to the game, baseball and scoring some bonus money.

On the up side players can claim these bonuses up to fifteen times during the coming week. And the only games that will fulfill the wager requirement are online slots games, including the Real Series from Real Time, so that will be easy for players to meet. Online slots players have some fun slots bonuses at Slots Jungle to go along with playing those Real Series of online slots games.

Wagering Dollars on Slots

July 13th, 2011

Is there a benefit to wagering a dollar per payline when playing online slots? Or is it better to stick with a smaller denomination, such as pennies or nickels, on the paylines?

These are questions that even experienced online slots players will ask from time to time. They are brought on by whether or not there is more money in wagering with dollars than cents. But both ways of wagering on online slots games have pros and cons.

When it comes to wagering a dollar on each payline the first observation is that the cost per spin is definitely more. On a twenty payline slots game, a dollar per payline would mean $20 per spin. Sometimes this keeps players from wagering at that rate, but some will go for it because there usually is a longer payout in the long run, which makes sense when you figure the payouts will be based on a dollar instead of a penny or a nickel.

What players have to look at those and weigh is whether they want to risk wager $20 for a spin. Yes, the payouts will be more than if a penny was wagered, but comparing the amount won on a smaller payout of say $4 or $5 could be seen as not worth it to some online slots players. On the other hand, hitting a high end payout or the jackpot will yield a lot more money than wagering only pennies or nickels per payline.

When making your decision on who much to wager per payline consider how much is in your bankroll. If you are not playing with a bankroll that could sustain wagering at $20 a spin it would be best to wager less per payline.

This afternoon I will discuss the pros and cons of wagering with pennies and nickels.

Jackpots and the RNG

July 12th, 2011

No matter how many times it is explained that the Random Number Generator (RNG) of an online slots game does not adjust itself once the game’s jackpot is won there will still be players who believe otherwise. They base this on the fact that they do not immediately win the jackpot on their next spin right after winning the jackpot. Because they do not immediately win again they assume that the online slots game’s RNG has adjusted itself to not land the winning symbols again.

So we are going to look at how an online slots game could not award another jackpot immediately after awarding a jackpot without adjusting the RNG.

An online slots game has thousands of possible outcomes for a spin. Possibly even tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands. It all depends on the number of symbols in the game. So let’s say that you spin the reels and win the jackpot. The RNG will keep on cycling through possible outcomes; it never stops cycling, not even for a jackpot. And all of those thousands and thousands of possible outcomes could come up on the next spin.

So let’s say that in a year you win two jackpots. That means that you have two spins, two opportunities, to land the jackpot combination out of the thousands of possibilities.

Say there are 50,000 possible outcomes. The RNG is cycling through them in microseconds. You only have one chance after winning a jackpot to land the winning combination again. One in say fifty thousand.

This is not to say that it could never happen. This is to say that it is highly unlikely that it will. The smart online slots player understands the probability of a double jackpot and of the RNG landing on the winning combination two times in a row. They look at the thousands of spins that it took to land the jackpot once, and recognize that it could take just as many spins to land it again. This is just how online slots and their RNGs work.
