More Paylines a Good Thing?

May 28th, 2010

It seems like online slots games started a few paylines and then grew some more. And then some more. And then more. Until the most common number of paylines to be found on an online slots game became twenty five.

This is as opposed to the slot machines of old that only had one payline. And only three reels I might add.

It seemed that software developers of online slots games were quite content to keep adding more and more paylines. There are some online slots games with fifty and one hundred paylines. I am not sure if the increase in paylines was the choice of the software developers or what the online casinos wanted. It actually does not really matter who chose it, the point is why.

More paylines was presented to online slots players as more opportunities to win. And on the surface the reasoning seems pretty sound. Obviously with twenty five paylines you have more chances of winning on a spin than if you only had one or five.

But what is not really considered is the extra cost. Having more paylines to play on per spin only increases the cost of the spin.

Let’s say that you are playing an online slots game with only nine paylines, and that you are wagering $0.01 per line and only one coin per line—none of that multi-coin nonsense in this example. On that nine payline online slots game, one spin would cost you $0.09. You would have eleven spins for every $1 you had.

Now let’s say that you are still only wagering $0.01 per payline and only one coin, but you are playing a twenty five payline. Now you are wagering $0.25 per spin, so $1 only gets you four spins.

The argument could go on forever. Yes, more paylines does offer more chances to land a winning combination in an online slots game, but on the other hand, you are losing more money faster because of the increased cost of a spin.

Realistically your chances of landing a winning combination are the same and the actual cost of a spin is proportional to the chances of winning. It is more a matter of how much you have in your bankroll to begin with and how far you want to stretch your bankroll.

RNG and Free Spins

May 28th, 2010

While I like bonus games on online slots games better than free spins, free spins do have their place and one should not turn their nose up at them. After all the multipliers on those free spins is what makes them a close second to a good bonus game.

But what about the Random Number Generator (RNG)? Does it already know the outcome of my free spins? And if it does how, if at all, does it affect my free spins?

The issue with this question is that the RNG is being giving human like qualities. As if this is a computer process with a brain. And it does not have a brain.

Remember that an RNG is a computing process that, when first created, is fed all of the possible outcomes for an online slots game. This includes all of the possible outcomes for free spins. In all actuality the outcomes on free spins are not any different than the outcomes during a regular spin. The difference is the payout which the game’s computer calculates based off of what the RNG throws up as the outcome of a spin.

So a quick review of how the outcome of a free spin works. The online slots game’s computer sets the reels spinning. The moment the reels start to spin, the RNG polls all possible results and selects one as the outcome. That all happens in a second, and that is why the Stop Spin buttons are useless.

So far the outcome of a free spin is the same as a regular spin. The only difference is that once the reels stop, the slots game’s computer will tally the results and apply the multiplier if necessary. The multiplier is not a part of the RNG, but is rather a part of the game’s computer.

Because the multiplier is a separate component of the slots game, issuing from the computer once the reels stop spinning, free spins are not any different from regular spins in terms of the RNG’s work.

When you are playing out free spins on an online slots game, remember that the results of a spin are not being determined any differently than normal, and that the only difference is the multiplier that the game’s computer is applying to the outcome.

Medusa Is Not All Bad

May 27th, 2010

Welcome to Ancient Greece, land of myths. One of the most well known myths is that of Medusa, the woman with snakes for hair that could turn you into stone if you looked her in the eye. She was definitely a person to fear in Ancient Greece.

But apparently Microgaming does not have a problem with her as they have made an online slots game for her and other figures of Greek legend. This five reel, twenty five payline online slots game is called the Mark of Medusa.

While I am not a big fan of snakes I did not mind them so much in this online slots game. And they show up on more symbols that just Medusa’s; they are worked into the design of the 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, which are slowly turning from colorful symbols into stone.

Other symbols to be found here include a Greek Urn, Swords, Soldiers and the Cerberus. Although you are probably more familiar with the Cerberus in Harry Potter known as Fluffy—cute name for the dog by the way.

But the Greek legends do not stop there. As already mentioned, Medusa is to be found in this online slots game. It is named for her after all. But you will not find yourself turning away from her in this game.

She is the Wild and will substitute for any symbol other than the scatter. One of her will award you a 2x the wager on the payline it landed on, while five of her will award 10,000 coins.

Then there is the Scatter: the Pegasus. This winged horse is not just a Scatter payout, he is also the trigger of the Free spins.

Landing three Pegasuses will award you fifteen free spins. Four is worth twenty free spins. And five will trigger twenty five free spins. And all free spins have a 3x multiplier on them.

Not to mention that in this online slots game you can trigger more free spins during free spins. I wound up with thirty spins in one turn that paid me 1,408 coins.

As for whether the free spins are worth the play to trigger them, that is iffy. You might make your money back or you might now. Being that this is an online slots game and Medusa that we are talking about I am going to venture to say that it probably is not worth it.

And this is why I tend to like bonus games more—in most cases it is worth the spins to trigger them. However, I did wind up in the positive for this online slots game. Seems Medusa is not all bad.

Microgaming Releases New Slots

May 27th, 2010

Microgaming is at it again.

The leading software developer of online casino games has put their legendary graphic and game design prowess into three new online slots games. These new online slots games are to be called Carnival, Winning Wheels and What a Hoot.

To start things off, Carnival is a five reel online slots game with nine paylines of play. Players can wager up to five coin sizes; the maximum bet though is $45.

The game’s name is its indicator that there is a festival theme to this slots game. Players will have a Wild and Scatter mixed in with the fun festival atmosphere.

But this is no ordinary Wild. It can only be found on reels three and four, which does limit its ability to create winning combinations. But the Scatter helps to make up for that by offering 50x multiplier for five Scatters.

Next up is Winning Wheels. This one is more classic in its design. It is a three reel with a single payline. And while it does have a motor sports theme with drivers and checkered flags, there are the traditionally fruity symbols that were originally associated with old-time slots games.

The wager range on this classic slots game brought to the online area is $0.10 up to $10 per spin. And the game does offer the classic nudge and hold feature found on traditional slots games.

And finally there is What a Hoot. On a side note, I like this title best.

What a Hoot is a five reel online slots game with nine paylines, like Carnival. As per the title, this is an owl themed game. While I have not yet seen this online slots game, I have heard that this is a cute owl theme though. And its wager range makes it a good candidate for low stakes to moderate stacks: $0.01 up to $5 per line.

To help players in their owl quest for money is a Wild and a Scatter. It is worth noting that there are thirty eight winning combinations to be had in this game, with a jackpot of 25,000 coins.

If you are a Microgaming fan start checking in with your favorite Microgaming online casino for the appearance of this new online slots games.

iSlots Rock!

May 25th, 2010

How many online slots players out there like video games like Guitar Hero? If you are one of them then I have got an online slots game for you. Actually it is an iSlot but, trust me, you will like this iSlot.

Naturally because this is an iSlot it comes to slots players from Rival Gaming. The slots game? It is called Rock On, and it is a five reel interactive online slots game with twenty paylines.

The name says it all though. This is an online slots game that is meant to play hard. What with familiar faces like Ringo, Hendrix, Manson and symbols like Guitars, Drums and Hand Signs, this online slots game is meant to get your energy up.

To help players on their way to money and rock star glory are a Scatter, an expanding Wild and a regular Wild.

The Drums are the Scatter. They not only give online slots players a Scatter payout but they also trigger five free spins with a 3x multiplier when at least three Drums are landed. And while that sounds nice, this makes these free spins even hotter: landing a drum on each of the five spins will award an extra payout.

The Green Guitar will act as your expanding Wild. It will cover its entire reel to help create more winning combinations.

The Red Guitar is the regular Wild, substituting for all symbols except for the Expanding Wild, Scatter and Bonus Symbol.

And speaking of the Bonus Symbol, here comes the King. Yes, Elvis is the Bonus Symbol. Landing three of the King will trigger the interactive bonus round…

How are your guitar skills by the way? Because you are going to need them in this bonus game.

This iSlot’s bonus game is set up similar to Guitar Hero. There is a seven song set list which online slots players will play through, one song for each bonus round. This song list includes ‘Gold Mine,’ ‘Egyptian Queen’ and ‘Garden of Secrets’ along with four more. Players are presented with the frets of a guitar and, like in Guitar Hero, must click the pick on the notes as they slide over the frets. The more notes hit the more coins won.

With all the lights and sounds—not to mention that rock star interactive bonus game—this is one iSlot that is not to be missed! Rock On turns the ordinary online slots game into your very own rock concert inside your computer.

New Slots Tournaments at Rushmore

May 25th, 2010

Recently because of a disagreement and a discontinuation of working together between Real Time Gaming and 21Gnet, Rushmore Casino stopped offering their online blackjack tournaments.

But an online casino is incomplete without any tournament offerings.

So in place of the blackjack tournaments, Rushmore is now offering online slots tournaments. Online slots players that were already at Rushmore were thrilled when they found out since prior to now there had only been blackjack tournaments offered Rushmore. Now those online slots players will find themselves quickly joined by other online slots players

Rushmore kicked off their online slots tournaments by hosting a freeroll tournament with a prize pool of $10,000. Needless to say, we can expect good things to come from Rushmore’s future online slots tournament offerings.

To get in on the tournament action sign up for a real money account and make a deposit. You are then all set to sign up for one of the online slots tournaments

Online slots players will be glad to know that Rushmore offers Welcome Bonus that is just for online slots players. They call it Slots Special Bonus. It is a 400% deposit match bonus worth up to $2,400. In order for players to take advantage of this bonus they need only enter the redemption code in the ‘Redeem Coupon’ section of the Cashier after making their first deposit.

There are three redemption coupons, one for each type of deposit method, so make sure that you are using the correct one: credit card deposits use SLOTS400; UseMyWallet uses SLOTS400UMW; and eWalletXpress uses SLOTS400EX.

With the $10,000 freeroll as an indicator of good things to come in the form of online slots tournaments, click over to Rushmore to get in on the new online slots tournament action.

Switching to Online Slots

May 24th, 2010

Are you making the jump from slot machines to online slots? Are you a little nervous about it?

Well, that is understandable. You are going from a casino environment to the Internet. It is a lot bigger and even a little on the scary side. But there are things that you can do to make the transition to online slots less scary and even a little smoother.

First, do not be afraid to ask questions. Every reputable online casino has a customer support staff. Those people are there to help make your online gambling experience enjoyable. If you have questions about making deposits or about the online casino itself, those are the people to ask. They can be reached through email or telephone, and some even have a live chat feature.

Second, do a little bit of research about any potential online casinos that you are thinking of playing online slots at. Only play slots at an online casino that is licensed. Most online casinos will have who they are licensed by on the site. If not they do not have it posted this would be a good time to take their customer support staff for a trial run—contact them and ask. If an online casino is not licensed then you do not want to play online slots there.

Third, check what deposit methods any potential online casinos offer. You do not want to choose one only to find they do not take your preferred form of payment. For example, if you want to make deposits to your account using your credit card, make sure they accept your brand of credit card.

And while you are checking out deposit methods check what their privacy statements say. Or ask their customer support how they are guaranteeing your privacy and the privacy of your financial information.

Fourth, check out what online slots games they are offering. That is the reason that you are there after all. If you like three reel slots, see what they have to offer in three reel slots. Or five reel is that is what you like. The point is that you want to make sure that you like the online slots games that they are offering. If you do not like what they offer then chances are you will not enjoy your online slots experience.

By doing and checking these things before you actually begin playing will help ensure that you have an enjoyable online slots experience.

Long Term Payout vs. Casino Expenses

May 24th, 2010

When it comes to slot machines and their payout percentages, some players are concerned that they are not getting what the signs say.

Casinos will post signs above a single slot machine or over a bank of slot machines advertising what the payout percentage is. Bear in mind that the payout percentage signs above a bank of slot machines do not necessarily mean all of them have that payout percentage—only one needs to in order for that sign to go up.

With the economy being down visitors to brick and mortar casinos is down. Yet they still need to pay their employees, pay their utilities and pay rent. Those who play slot machines wonder how they make it work with visitors, read: revenue, down.

In short, they are worrying that the slot machines are not in fact paying out like the payout percentage signs say, that the casinos have perhaps changed the slot machines payout percentages to spin in a little extra money.

I am happy to say that this is not the case. The payout percentage, also known as a machine’s payback, is not affected by the casino’s expenses. In fact they do not have anything to do with each other.

A slot machine’s payout percentage is the calculation of how much that slot machine is paying out from the total amount of wagers made on it.

Basically the percentage of payout only has to do with that slot machine because it only takes into consideration how much was wagered on it and how much of those wagers were paid back to players. Because the payout percentage is solely based on the wagers of players it has nothing to do with the casino’s expenses.

So players of slot machines can rest assured that the payout percentages on their favorite slot machines have not been altered because of the casino’s expenses.

And besides it would take too much time and too much paperwork, not to mention a good-sized chunk of money, to change the payout percentage of a slot machine. They cannot be changed on a whim and without that state’s gaming commission knowing about it.

Soaps and Slots—Part One

May 21st, 2010

Those who love soap operas will love the iSlot As the Reels Turn. This five reel, fifteen payline online slots game from Rival follows several characters in the drama of the El Paradiso Casino.

Because this is an iSlot the story unfolds only when you make it. So pull up a chair and your computer and get ready to follow Matt G, Chrissy and the Don as the reels turn.

Online slots players will begin with Matt G lamenting that he cannot afford a friend in the world and leaving something confidential in his safe at the El Paradiso.

To help online slots players uncover the next scene they have four Scatters to work with. One triggers free spins, two trigger bonus games, and the last one moves the online slots player to the next scene.

Three or more Ivan Scatters will trigger ten free spins with a 3x multiplier.

Three or more of the Tommy symbols or the Bonus symbols will trigger the Tommy Wong bonus game and the bonus game respectively.

In the Tommy Wong bonus game you help Tommy choose what act he is going to perform that night. The more the audience loves his act, the more you win. And in the bonus game you help Matt G find counterfeit coins. The more authentic ones you find, the more money you win.

Then three or more Advance Scatters will advance you to the next scene in this iSlot. When an online slots player triggers the Advance they are treated to a video scene to watch the next part of the As the Reels Turn soap opera along with a bonus game.

The second scene has online slots players in on the plot to help uncover who is slipping the counterfeit chips into Matt G’s casino.

As there are several scenes to this iSlots, the total review of the game will have to be broken down in parts. Every now and then I will revisit As the Reels Turn and play up to the next scene. Check back to see what happens next and what the next scene holds for bonus games.

Looking For Newer Online Slots

May 21st, 2010

It seems there is no end to the online slots games that software developers can create. Every few months or so one of them is releasing a new set of online slots games. And while the themes, graphics and overall appearance change, the basis of the online slots game does not.

And while we online slots games players do enjoy our games, trying the new ones and replaying our favorites, there are times that we wish that there was something truly new in terms of online slots games. Something different.

Thankfully Rival Gaming came up with something new for online slots games that is really new and not just a new theme. Their latest type of online slots game is not about how many reels or how many paylines the game has, but the core of the game.

Rival has created the iSlot, which is short of Interactive Slot.

This new type of online slots game changes how players interact with their game. Whereas with slots games the players are merely along for the ride their money takes them on, the iSlots require more of the player.

For example, if you triggered a bonus game in a standard five reel, twenty five payline slots game you are most likely to be taken to a second screen, where you merely pick one of a handful options, your bonus prize is revealed, and then you are taken back to the first screen for more reel spinning.

But with the bonus games in an iSlot you are not merely a picking bystander. Players must interact with the slots game and how they play the bonus game will impact their bonus prize.

Take Heavyweight Gold for example. In that slots game’s bonus game you are controlling the boxer and must fight an opponent. How you well you beat him and how quickly have an impact on your prize; and if you lose, well, you get a prize but no nearly what you would have gotten if you had won. And you can lose in this game. You are controlling the boxer after all, telling him when to block and when to hit.

What iSlots give an online slots player is more interaction. And more interaction drives up the fun of the game. These are not slots games in which you sit back and watch the reels spin—with these you have to participate. And that active role is what is making iSlots the new direction of online slots games.
