The RNG and Stopping the Spin

December 22nd, 2009

There has been a myth that I’ve heard tell of in the world of slots. The myth is that once you have begun the spinning, pressing the Spin button again will stop the reels and increase your chances of a big win.

This is not in any way true. And the reason for that lies with the Random Number Generator (RNG).

First, we will look at how the RNG and your coins or credits work.

Some players think that the RNG has already pre-determined the outcome of the next spin before you insert your slot ticket or your coins. This is not true. The programming in the slot machine’s RNG will generate the numbers for the outcome after you have begun the game.

In other words, the slot machine is not secretly holding the outcome before you have fed it your slot ticket or coins. The outcome is generated once you put your money in and press the Spin button.

Now, let’s look at the idea that stopping the spin will change the outcome and increase your chances of winning big.

What a player does in this instance is insert his slot ticket into the slot machine or feed it coins. He then chooses the number of pay lines. And then he presses the Spin button. But rather than letting the reels spin out and stop on their own, he will press the Spin button again, causing the reels to stop spinning.

The theory is that if the first reel to stop shows an image that is associated with a big win, stopping the spin will increase the chances that the rest of the reels will line up to give you that big win.

But remember what we just discussed about the RNG? The RNG’s results are determined once you press the Spin button. So it does not matter whether you stop the spin or let the reels spin out—the results are already determined at that point, from the moment you begun the game by pressing Spin…the first time.
